Dimitar Berbatov may make a surprise return to Champions League action this week after Manchester United’s injury problems deepened with the loss of Javier Hernandez.
Sir Alex Ferguson says the Bulgarian, who picked up a knock in last week’s Carling Cup defeat against Crystal Palace, will be in the frame for Wednesday’s trip to Switzerland to face Basle after Hernandez was ruled out for a month with ankle- ligament damage.

The Mexican was carried off on a stretcher after he fell to the ground during the opening stages of Saturday’s 1-0 victory at Aston Villa.
‘We are having a bad time with injuries at the moment but that’s why we have a strong squad,’ said Ferguson. ‘Danny Welbeck is fit and fortunately he got 15 minutes against Villa which is good, so he is an option.
‘But Nani did all right through the middle, as did Valencia when he came on. He was excellent. We may have Berbatov fit as well.’
There was no update however, on the fitness of Rio Ferdinand. The centre half was substituted in the 64th minute against Villa but United have not yet clarified whether he will be fit to play.
