Young wary of battling Wigan
Ashley Young is confident United can take a step closer to the title tonight, but knows the Reds must not underestimate relegation-threatened Wigan. The Reds make the short trip to the DW Stadium looking to stay eight points clear of Manchester City, who are also in action at home to West Brom.
United’s flawless 14-game record against the Latics since they returned to the Premier League is well documented, whileYoung has previously enjoyed success against them with Aston Villa.
But in recent weeks Roberto Martinez’s second-bottom side have shown real fight in their battle to avoid the drop, and Young is braced for a struggle tonight.
The winger told ManUtd.com: "Wigan is a tough place to go to – they’re desperate for points and will want to win in front of their own fans.
"We’ve got to be on our toes and be ready for a tough game. I’m sure if we can show the confidence, desire and winning mentality we’ve shown throughout the season, we’ll get the win.
"I scored my last goal for Villa against Wigan last season at Villa Park and also scored against them away from home, so I’ve enjoyed some decent results against them. Hopefully there will be another to follow tonight."
Last weekend’s win over QPR, coupled with City’s defeat at Arsenal, put United in charge at the top. But Young insists the team’s sole immediate focus is on extending an eight-game winning run.
"We’re just ticking the games off as we go along and staying focused on each one," he added.
