Dimitar Berbatov is set to extend his stay at Manchester United after the club opted to take up a 'one-way option' in the Bulgarian striker's deal.

A clause in Berbatov's contract, which expires in the summer, allows United to extend the 31-year-old's deal by another year. It can be activated from Thursday and can be done so even without the striker's consent.

Paris Saint-Germain and Berbatov's former club Bayer Leverkusen have both been heavily linked with moves for Berbatov, and the activation of the clause does not necessarily mean he will stay beyond the summer.

Ferguson could still decide to let Berbatov leave in the close season, but with the clause activated he can try and recoup some of the £30million he paid Tottenham for his services in August 2008.

Back in December, Ferguson said: 'We’ll be exercising (the option to renew). I think it kicks in in March.'

Despite an impressive start to his United career, the Bulgarian was famously left out of last season's Champions League squad and now finds himself fourth in United's striking pecking order behind Wayne Rooney, Javier Hernandez and Danny Welbeck.

Berbatov has an impressive return of 49 goals in 82 Premier League starts.
