Wesley Sneijder will be cheered up by a new poll – after expressing disappointment that his move to Manchester United had fallen through this week.

The Inter Milan star has admitted that he was flattered by United’s interest and unhappy that the move never materialised.

“Manchester are one of the biggest clubs in the world, so of course I was open to a move,” he said. “I don’t really know why they eventually stopped their attempts to sign me.”

But the Dutch star will at least be pleased to know that he created a huge amount of interest during the transfer window – according to a poll published last night.

The Yahoo! search trend data revealed he was the most searched-for player throughout the transfer window. Runner-up was Robbie Keane, whose transfer from Tottenham to LA Galaxy two weeks ago caused such a stir.

Arsene Wenger might be thinking that bringing in almost a whole new team of players will have diverted attention away from Arsenal’s shock 8-2 loss at United.

But the purchase of Mikel Arteta and Yossi Benayoun at the 11th hour failed to capture the imagination of fans.

These transfers brought the club’s total to nine signings, making them one of the most active clubs in the market, but none of the deals featured in the top 20.

On the other hand, Cesc Fabregas’s departure to Barcelona was noted, with the Spanish midfielder coming third in the most-searched list.
