Stunning attack on Chelsea

Manchester United first-team coach Rene Meulensteen has branded Chelsea's squad 'too old' to provide any real competition for the Premier League title this season.

Sir Alex Ferguson's assistant also believes local rivals Manchester City, tipped as serious contenders for title success this term, will not be able to compete with United's experience in winning silverware.

The Red Devils, targeting a 20th championship this season, are currently top of the table after securing wins in all three of their opening games, including their emphatic 8-2 rout of Arsenal last weekend.

And Meulensteen claims United have nothing to fear from any of their top-four competition, insisting the Gunners have regressed and Liverpool are still rebuilding.

He told the Daily Star: "We are not afraid of anyone at all.

"City have made very good signings, but we have something they don't possess. We know what it takes to win trophies.

Too old

"City are still a big rival. But Arsenal have gone backwards, Liverpool are still in a stage of rebuilding and Chelsea have just made one major signing in Juan Mata.

"Besides, Chelsea's squad is too old, and their tempo is not high enough to win the Premier League."

Meulensteen believes the threat Arsenal posed has been diluted by the exits of captain Cesc Fabregas and key midfielder Samir Nasri this summer.

"Our win over Arsenal was something special," he added.

"Their squad has lost a lot of quality with Fabregas and Nasri's departures. It's as though nothing is going right for Arsene Wenger right now."

Rene is insane, its not how well you start but how well you end it. Has he forgotten what chelsea did last season? We scored 16 goals in 3 games. He should be aware of what he says as the season is too early to conclude.

Arrogance and disrespect an understatement for this guy. I'm a Valencia fan but if i remember correctly the last time a man utd official said this about Chelsea, they went on to win the double. Hope they do it again just to humble this guy.

Chelsea made more than one major signing. And importantly, the signings were in the creativity areas where Chelsea have been at their weakest for some time (and still managed to come in second last year). I still think Man U will win it but to write off Chelsea like that is naive.

his comments have taken some pressure off of us. we can now take our time and surprise him come the end of the season. he seems to be over comfident and that is great

well to be honest he's ignorant. the average age of chelsea's squad is less than barelona's, you don't see anyone saying they don't stand a chance. mata isn't the only major signing, i think he's been under a rock during the last day of transfers. chelsea have also signed raul meireles. i don't see how being ignorant can make you a title contender?

How original a Manchester United Coach making negative reference to age of Chelsea's squad. And this time in spite of the fact theyve signed half a dozen top young players and Frank Lampard is probably the only player over 30 who'll start this season. Its starting to get pretty boring.
