Harry Redknapp has given his clearest sign yet that he is already planning for England - and wants to bring Paul Scholes out of retirement.
Redknapp is the Football Association’s only target to become the new England manager and the Tottenham boss has spelt out his vision for the job. That will include trying to tempt Manchester United veteran Scholes, 37, to play at the Euros and says he can be as important as Xavi and Andres Iniesta are to world champions Spain.
Redknapp believes Frank Lampard could still do a good job while Scott Parker is a contender for captain.
“Look at Paul Scholes. Lets be honest, you would love to have PS in the Euros this year. He’d be in your team, he’s that good.
“Whoever’s there would love to take him I’m sure You’d love him to play. He plays like the Spaniards, like Xavi, or Iniesta - he does not give the ball away.
“Frank Lampard is still a top player. You write Frank off at your peril. He’s still a top player in my opinion. Stevie Gerrard still a top class player. We have got some good players in our midfield.
“I think there are some good candidates (for captain). Scott could be. Steven Gerrard is a good candidate as well. Stevie Gerrard a fantastic player. There are one or two who could do it. But Scottie could do it for sure, but so could Steve.”
Redknapp believes England under performed at the last World Cup under Fabio Capello and blew a great chance.
Ex-West Ham boss Redknapp added: “There’s good players here, good players in England for sure, good young players.
“I felt in South Africa was the best chance we had had since 1966 to win with the World Cup. That was my honest opinion. I really could see us winning it, I thought it was a fantastic squad of players. But we were disappointing.
“In think we have got some good players, but everybody has thought we had good players since ‘66. And we have never achieved anything. That’s the problem. And there have been some good managers in that time.”
Tottenham fans chanted “We Don’t Want You To Go” at Redknapp during Saturday’s win over Newcastle.
There is also that feeling among the players as defender Ledley King insisted that they also want Redknapp to stay but are absolutely convinced he will be committed for at least the rest of the season.
King said: “As a group of players we love him and hopefully he will stay. We are focused on this season as players and we don’t know what will happen next.
“We need to keep our focus until the end of the season. What will happen in the summer will happen. For now the gaffer will be here.
“He has brought on the club massively. We were bottom when he first came in and the results picked up straight away. Staright away he showed his skills, people skills and ability to lift players even when their confidence was low.
“He has gone from strength to strength, brought in some good players, experienced players who know what it takes. It has been really good.”
