Deal him in! Paul Pogba next on Manchester United list
November 12, 2011
| Paul Pogba is the latest Manchester United young gun Sir Alex Ferguson wants to tie down to a long-term deal.
The highly-rated French midfielder is seen as the future at Old Trafford after making such an impressive impact with the academy and the reserves.
The 18-year-old is considered one of the hottest properties in Europe, with a host of the continent’s top clubs ready to swoop if he becomes available.
Italian giants, Inter and AC Milan have already been linked with a move for Pogba, while Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was keen on him before United signed him from Le Havre in 2009.
Ferguson has sought to secure the futures of several of his current starlets, handing new deals to Javier Hernandez, Tom Cleverley and Chris Smalling in recent months.
And the United manager has already stated his desire to keep hold of a player who has been likened to Patrick Vieira as a midfield enforcer.
United did not reveal the length of Pogba’s contract when he signed in contentious circumstances from Le Havre – but Ferguson revealed in August that he still had two years to run on his deal.
Ferguson is planning beyond his reign at Old Trafford and is keen to ensure his successor is left with a top class squad capable of preserving the club’s Premier League dominance.
Key to that is keeping hold of United’s emerging talent – notably the most promising members of last season’s successful FA Youth Cup winning side.
“I believe in young people,” he said. “You need a foundation at a football club and that is vital.
“You can build a first team, but you really do need the back-up and the foundation to make it a football club.”
United were heavily criticised by Le Havre when bringing their star prospect to England – but were subsequently cleared of any wrong-doing by FIFA.
Ferguson believed he had discovered a gem in the elegant midfielder and plans to integrate Pogba into the first team this season, including him in the Carling Cup wins against Leeds and Aldershot.
In the summer he said: “We’re quite positive about him. If we hold him back, what’s going to happen?
“He’s going to leave in a couple of years’ time when his contract is finished.”
Will Pogba make it into United's first team? Have your say.
