Dimitar Berbatov is a £15million January target for mega-spending Russian club FC Anzhi Makhachkala.
Berbatov, currently out of favour at Manchester United, has been offered an escape route from his Old Trafford predicament.
Anzhi have been in talks with the 30-year-old's agent, Emil Danchev, and are willing to pay the striker £7.5million a year.
Berbatov and his agent are holding out for £12m, but a dealwillbe done if a compromise is reached on the player’s wage demands.
"I don’t know if Dimitar is happy in Manchester. He plays, then he just sits on the bench.”
United are willing to let Berbatov go - particularly with Anzhi willing to pay such a generous price for the Bulgarian, who was signed by Sir Alex Ferguson from Tottenham for £30m in 2008.
Berbatov lost his United place midway through last season and suffered the ultimate indignity when he did not even make the subs' bench for the Champions League Final against Barcelona.
Although Ferguson has publicly praised Berbatov’s attitude, and the player himself has not spoken out over his demotion, both parties see a parting of the ways as inevitable.
Negotiations between Berbatov’s agent and Anzhi's representatives are set to continue, with the hope a deal can be struck to allow a move in the winter transfer window.
Berbatov is out of contract at the end of this season, which is why United are keen to explore the possibility of selling him in January.
Although United have a one-way clause to extend his contract by 12 months, it is understood they have no desire to exercise that option and that a sale is preferred.
Anzhi have flexed their considerable financial muscle by buying a host of big-name players since being taken over by Russian billionaire Suleyman Kerimov last January.
They have already signed Brazil World Cup winner and former Real Madrid defender Roberto Carlos, as well as ex-Chelsea midfielder Yuri
