Fergie's 25 years at United: How a hooky Scottish accent helped Reds get their man
Published 21:30 31/10/11 By David McDonnell
The farcical lengths Manchester United went to in appointing Sir Alex Ferguson included mimicking a Scottish accent to get their man.
United director Mike Edelson resorted to putting on a Scottish accent in a telephone call to Aberdeen to get to speak to their then boss in 1986.
Former United chairman Martin Edwards recalled: “We had to make sure Alex would at least talk to us and maybe meet us.
“I could hardly get on the phone and say ‘Hello, this is Martin Edwards from Manchester United, can I speak with Alex Ferguson?’ could I?
“So we did that, Mike passed Alex over to me, we had a quick chat and he said he was interested.
“We drove up to Scotland on Bonfire Night, met Alex at a service station and then drove to his sister-in-law’s house.
“We didn’t talk terms, we just wanted to establish he would be prepared to come to us, which we did.
“We flew up to Aberdeen the next day and everything - negotiations and compensation - was concluded swiftly.
“There was no doubt in my mind who I wanted for the job, and the rest of the board didn’t need persuading. Alex was our number one choice.”

Tonight, Big Brother added a shocking twist into this evening’s festivities - face to face nominations in the garden. After a Halloween dress-up session, Big Brother called them to the spooky-themed garden where six large electric chairs awaited them.
Every time someone mentioned the name of the person they wished to nominate, the named housemate would receive a shock.
The housemates decided to hatch a plan to influence this week’s nominations so that each housemate would receive two nominations each, and therefore all of them would face the public vote. But it didn’t work. Aaron decided to go off script and opting to nominate who he saw fit.
As a result, Faye and Louise will be facing the public vote in this week’s eviction battle.
Louise quickly became teary-eyed, as it’s her first week being up for the public vote. “At the end of the day you’re meant to go,” she told Tom. “You gotta be up at some stage.” Faye sat in the living room in silence, gathering her thoughts, on probably about what went wrong with their masterful plan.

Tevez 'wants to stay in the Premier League'
Published 22:31 31/10/11 By David McDonnell
Tevez, out of favour with City boss Roberto Mancini following the notorious bench episode against Bayern Munich, is keen to stay in England.
The striker’s City career looks over after Mancini said he was “finished” at the club and Tevez’s advisor, Kia Joorabchian, said the 27-year-old would welcome a move elsewhere in the Premier League.
“His family are now living in England, so he’s quite happy and settled,” said Joorabchian.
Tevez was initially charged with refusing to come off the bench under orders from Mancini in a Champions League tie in Munich on September 27.
City were forced to downgrade that charge to one of refusing to carry out duties as a first-team player and duly found Tevez guilty of five separate breaches of his contract.
Although City fined Tevez four weeks’ wages - around £1million - they were forced to halve that penalty on orders from the Professional Footballers’ Association, which sets the rulings for such practices.
“This week, the Professional Footballers’ Association rejected the claim that he had refused to come on as a substitute,” said Joorabchian.
“That has changed everything and clarified what actually happened.
“Carlos wasdesperateto play. He loves to play the game and always wants to play. Having to sit on the sidelines is very tough for him.
“It’s not easy for him at the moment, but, in the January transfer window, City will want to get him out either on a permanent basis or on loan.
“We’ll have to wait and see what happens.”
Joorabchian did confirm there was no way Tevez would return to former club West Ham, after their boss Sam Allardyce had expressed interest in taking him on loan.
“He loves West Ham... but that’s not going to happen,” said Joorabchian.

Krasic has recently voiced his disapproval at being left out of the Juve team and a move to Manchester United has been muted. However, Sir Alex Ferguson’s side may have to let Valencia leave if they want to land Krasic as Juve would like a direct replacement.

Manchester United Scout £17m-Rated Newcastle Midfielder Ahead of Shock Offer
Manchester United are reportedly keeping tabs on Newcastle's playmaker midfielder Yohan Cabaye and will consider making a move at the end of the season.
Cabaye, who was signed by the Magpies in the summer for £4.5m, is proving to be one of the players of the season and has been instrumental in Newcastle's bright start to the league.
United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is reportedly desperate to improve his midfield options and according to The People, has set his sights on Cabaye.
It is thought Ferguson will have the 25-year-old scouted and will continue to keep tabs on him. If he continues to impress, the United boss will reportedly make an official offer at the end of the season.
Despite proving to be an essential part of their team, Newcastle will surely have to reluctantly accept a big offer for Cabaye were one to arrive.
It is thought a bid of around £17m would tempt the St James' Park club into allowing United to hold talks with the talisman

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar 'eyed by Man Utd as Dimitar Berbatov replacement'
Manchester United are reportedly eyeing up Schalke striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar as a possible replacement for Dimitar Berbatov.
Klaas act: Huntelaar has rediscovered his scoring touch (Picture: Getty Images)
The Dutch hitman has rediscovered his form following unsuccessful spells at Real Madrid and AC Milan, and United are now monitoring his situation with Berbatov seemingly on his way out of Old Trafford.
Huntelaar has hit an impressive 16 goals in 18 appearances this season, but with his contract due to expire in 2013, Schalke may be forced to cash in on the striker in January rather than risk losing him on the cheap in the summer.
Berbatov meanwhile, looks to be no closer to agreeing a new deal with United, and with Wayne Rooney, Javier Hernandez and Danny Welbeck ahead of him in the pecking order, there appears to be no future for the 30-year-old under Sir Alex Ferguson beyond this season.
The Bulgarian is out of contract in July, and United will surely be keen to recoup some of the £30million they spent on him back in 2008, meaning a swap deal with Schalke for Huntelaar could well be on the cards.
Huntelaar, 28, was signed by the Bundesliga outfit for £10million from AC Milan back on the August transfer deadline day in 2010.

"It’s always been better to finish first than second. After getting the first result against Galati and then playing them again at home, we’ll hopefully go into the Benfica game with eight points. That will be an important match."

31/10/2011 10:30, Report by Adam Marshall
Boss expects Euro victory
Sir Alex does not anticipate making wholesale changes to his line-up for the Champions League tie with Otelul Galati on Wednesday. The Reds have five points from three games in Group C and will be looking to complete the double over the Romanian champions, even though they have acquitted themselves well in all of their matches despite competing at this level for the first time.
Wayne Rooney's penalties secured a 2-0 victory in Bucharest and, with home advantage, United will be looking to move on to eight points and close on a place in the knockout stages.
"I don't think there will be a lot of changes," revealed the boss. "Maybe two or three but no more.
"We have to win on Wednesday, without doubt. We're at home and I expect us to win and, if we do that, it's in our hands when we play Benfica at home.
"I expect Benfica to beat Basel as they're in a bit of disarray with Thorsten Fink going to Hamburg. We'll hopefully win our game and, when we play Benfica at home, it'll be the decider in our section."
Sir Alex acknowledges Galati are awkward opponents, who posed plenty of questions for the United defence in the 2-0 triumph earlier this month.
"Having watched them, I knew nobody turns them over," stressed the boss. "Their games against Basel and Benfica had been tight and they were exactly that way against us. Galati set out their stall to make sure they weren’t going to be embarrassed.
"They were well organised, really determined defensively and they got stuck right into us. Some of the tackles in the second half were very aggressive. It made it a difficult type of game but I think we improved enough after half-time to be the better team.

Man United step up chase for Toon hot-head Chieck Tiote
People Sport understands Old Trafford boss Sir Alex Ferguson has been impressed by the 25-year-old tough-tackling Ivory Coast international, who was signed for just £3.5million from Dutch side FC Twente last year.
Despite a Premier League record-equalling 14 yellow cards last season, Tiote has been a smash hit on Tyneside – and it’s not gone unnoticed by Ferguson.
The United manager also likes their French midfielder Yohan Cabaye but it’s the talents of Tiote that have really caught his eye.
Even before last week’s 6-1 hammering by rivals City, where Anderson and Darren Fletcher failed miserably to control the middle of the park, Ferguson had recognised United’s need for a powerful defensive midfielder – and that Tiote could fill the role. But the 25-year-old signed a six-and-a-half year deal at Newcastle in February meaning it will take a huge offer to tempt owner Mike Ashley into doing business.
Meanwhile, Tiote has revealed how his current life as a Premier League star is a stark contrast to his tough upbringing in Africa.
He said: “We all played barefoot back when I was young. I played barefoot until I was 15. It was good for technique and to have a good feeling for the ball. At 17, you started wearing boots.
“It is very difficult to play football over there. There are no facilities, no money to do everything you want to do.

Sir Alex has faith in squad
Sir Alex remains relaxed in the wake of the derby defeat to City and won't be rushing into the transfer market.
As expected, the manager is retaining faith in his squad after the championship triumph last term and blistering form at the start of the season.
Speaking ahead of the win at Everton, he rejected the suggestion that a reinforcement was needed in midfield.
"I think it's a good squad," he asserted. "We had a bad experience last week but it's not a bad team.
"Everyone builds their own in team in their own image, but we build ours in a different way to other clubs. We always play with wide players, for instance, and that's where we are.
"We know where we're going. We've always reviewed the situation quite well and we've bought well here. In the future, we hope we buy well again or a young player emerges, you never know."

Everton also had plenty of possession in the closing stages of each half but lacked the cutting edge to truly worry the visitors.
United boss Sir Alex Ferguson had given Jonny Evans a vote of confidence following his sending off against City by restoring him in defence after suspension. Evans took his place alongside Nemanja Vidic, himself sent off on Champions League duty recently, with Rio Ferdinand left on the bench.
Otherwise United's emphasis was on attack with Hernandez, Danny Welbeck and former Everton prodigy Wayne Rooney all starting.
Everton had problems with experienced pair Phil Neville and Tim Cahill ruled out, in-form Royston Drenthe suspended and defender Sylvain Distin unexpectedly missing from the teamsheet. That meant Phil Jagielka, who had been doubtful due to a hairline toe fracture, was pressed back into service.
Everton were the first side out of the blocks as Seamus Coleman burst down the right, cut inside Patrice Evra and fired a shot at David de Gea with just 15 seconds on the clock.
Pointing the way: Hernandez celebrates his goal with Darren Fletcher
Race for the ball: Ji-Sung Park (left) and Johnny Heitinga battle it out
A chance appeared to open up outside the box for Rooney, whose reception from the Goodison crowd was not too bitter, but referee Mike Halsey got in the way and he stabbed wide.
United claimed the lead when an Evra cross found its way to Hernandez in front of goal.
Jagielka was unable to reach the ball from the left and Hernandez tapped in unmarked.
No way through: Leon Osman tries to get past United defender Nemanja Vidic
Everton responded as Leon Osman first won a free-kick off Vidic on the edge of the box after beating the Serbian with a nice piece of skill.
Another former United player, Louis Saha, shot into the wall and Osman forced De Gea to save when the ball was eventually worked back in. Moments later Rodwell seized possession but drove wide.
Everton maintained the pressure as Marouane Fellaini won another free-kick in a good position five minutes before the interval when felled by Darren Fletcher.
Baines, who missed a penalty in the Carling Cup in midweek, stepped up and curled a superb effort against the crossbar. Saha had another couple of opportunities before the break but failed to trouble De Gea.
Diving for cover: Phil Jagielka clears the danger from Danny Welbeck
Rodwell extended De Gea for the first time when he cut inside onto his left foot from the right but the Spaniard produced a fine save to his right.
United immediately countered as Tom Cleverley, making his first Premier League appearance in seven weeks after recovering from a foot injury, released Hernandez with a brilliant long pass.
Stop him! Park and Hernandez attempt to halt Leighton Baines
Watching on: Sir Alex Ferguson (left) and David Moyes keep track of the action
Guess who? Is that you, Wayne?
Hernandez came inside but lacked options and slowed, allowing Everton to come clear. That proved to be Cleverley's last major involvement as he limped off shortly afterwards to be replaced by Nani.
Hernandez then picked out a charging Welbeck with a crossfield pass but Howard reacted quickly to palm out his volley.
Everton pressed again with Saha twice having shots blocked in a goalmouth scramble before Rodwell blazed over. Coleman got an attempt on target but again failed to trouble De Gea.
The game went into six minutes of injury time, caused in part by an injury to an assistant referee which forced fourth official Phil Dowd into emergency action on the line.
Home fans wanted a penalty when Saha went down in the area but replays showed the Frenchman slipping and colliding with Evra.
After that United held firm.
They may have beaten Aldershot in the Carling Cup on Tuesday but this victory, in spite of the performance, will do much more for their confidence as the shockwaves from Old Trafford last week continue to reverberate.

1 nil...ill take that at goodison...everton put up a strong fight but united looked comfortable in the end..all this talk about hernandez only scoring in the 6yard box...surely all that matters is that he puts the ball in the back of the net? you would rather play with him than against him i bet?!

A very professional performance by United and a very important result. Nobody at United would've dreamed of having 23 points after the first 10 games given how hard the opening fixtures were. So you have to say that despite last week's debacle, United have made a great start to the season. You can't t take anything for granted in this league but United have what looks like 11 very winnable games coming up before the end of January and it wouldn't surprise me if they were top of the league come the new year.

Manchester United are the best soccer team in the whole of the British league. Alan Ferguson is the best soccer coach ever. He should be the next coach for England. Manchester United will definitely win the World Cup next year!!!!!!!!
- Gareth, Ashford, 29/10/2011 14:37
A wingless United team, that's a change because it has always been one of their main strengths. Problem is the fact that all three wingers went off the boil at the same time! Vidic made a difference today and on the whole a good win at a difficult ground for us.
- Dave Pickup, Tarragona,Spain, 29/10/2011 14:14
Not at all impressive, but after last weeks desecration of the Theatre, any 3 points will do. Still, come January, someone other than Fletcher is required alongside Cleverley. Not Carrick, but maybe Anderson and another like Gotze.
