Vidic and Rooney set to return
Nemanja Vidic and Wayne Rooney are poised to return to United’s starting line-up for Tuesday’s Champions League encounter with Otelul Galati in Bucharest.Skipper Vidic has been sidelined with a calf injury since the opening day win at West Brom but is ready to face the Romanian outfit. Fellow centre-back Rio Ferdinand, who did not fly with the team on Monday morning, is rested.
Sir Alex opted not to start Rooney at Liverpool on Saturday following news of his three-match England ban, but says his frontman is raring to go after a lively cameo at Anfield.
"I think Wayne's ready," the Reds boss told a press conference in Bucharest. "When he came on [against Liverpool] I thought he was bubbly, full of energy and enthusiasm. He was desperate to get on, which was good.
"Rio played very well on Saturday but we have Vidic with us here and I felt it was a good opportunity to give Rio a break. Playing three games in seven days is a lot to ask."
Sir Alex believes the realisation has dawned on Rooney that he could not be involved at all in next summer's Euro 2012 finals in Poland and Ukraine.
"When you realise he misses all the group games for England, it could mean he won't be involved at all," he continued. "As England have experienced in the last few years, it's not easy to qualify in the major championships and I think that resonated on Wayne's mind.
"I don't think anybody expected him to get three games. It was silly without being seriously dangerous. It was a slight reaction."
