Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is preparing to step up his pursuit of a new midfielder and has set his sights on Dinamo Zagreb's Mateo Kovacic, according to reports on Goal.com.

During the course of the summer transfer window Ferguson was looking at a number of options to replace the retired Paul Scholes.

Both Tottenham's Luka Modric and Inter Milan's Wesley Sneijder were being lined up by Manchester United but nothing materialised.

A number of top clubs have been keeping tabs on Kovacic including Juventus, Bayern Munich and Premier League rivals Arsenal.

However it is believed that the Old Trafford outfit are leading the chase for the 17-year-old, and Ferguson has sent scouts out to watch him in action for Zagreb and the Croatian Under 21's.

It is felt the Croatian club have rated their prized asset at £10million and Kovacic's agent Marcel Kacinari has hinted his client could be on his way to the Premiership.

"It is most likely that he will go to England where the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United are leading the race," Kacinari said. "Dinamo Zagreb have done business in the past with several Premier League teams."
