EXCLUSIVE: It's Danny Welbucks! Man United to treble starlet's pay in long-term deal
By Sami MokbelLast updated at 10:48 PM on 19th October 2011
The England striker has been one of United's shining lights this season, scoring five goals in as many starts, and Ferguson wants to put his contract in line with other senior players.
Dan's the man: Welbeck has starred for Manchester United this season
He currently earns around £15,000 a week but such is his growing importance to United, the club want to increase that to around £50,000 a week to secure his future.
Your country needs you: The United striker has made the step up to international level
Welbeck will have the chance to impress for England ahead of Euro 2012 next summer and further success on the international stage would raise his profile even more, something his representatives will take into account.
Welbeck still has around 18 months left to run on his current deal but United want to conclude the pacy forward's new contract as soon as possible to ensure there is no lingering doubt over his future.
Welbeck, who spent last season out on loan at Sunderland, is the latest young talent whose future Ferguson has looked to secure in recent weeks.
Chris Smalling, 21, penned a new five-year deal in July before midfielder Tom Cleverley, 22, was rewarded for his excellent start to the season with a new four-year contract - news exclusively revealed by Sportsmail last Monday.
At the double: Smalling and Cleverley have both committed to long-term deals
After the retirement of Gary Neville and Paul Scholes last season, and with the likes of Ryan Giggs and Rio Ferdinand in the twilight of their careers, Ferguson has started work on building his next generation.
David de Gea, 20, and Phil Jones, 19, both signed for big money in the summer while the likes of Smalling and Anderson, 23, have been given bigger first-team roles this season.
Come here, Roo: The FA will speak to Evra within the next 48 hours
United have given clearance for Evra to meet FA officials but allowed their players to have yesterday off after flying back from Tuesday night's 2-0 Champions League win over Otelul Galati in Romania.
Evra is determined to pursue the case and, depending on what he says, the FA are likely to want to speak with Suarez as well.
