United were strongly linked with Inter Milan's Wesley Sneijder over the summer, but no official move was made.
It appears as though they have now set their sights on Gaitan, having seen first-hand this season just how devastating he can be.
The 23-year-old played a leading role for Benfica as they held United home and away in the UEFA Champions League.
Sir Alex Ferguson was understood to be impressed by what he saw and discussions are reported to have been held between the Red Devils and their Portuguese counterparts.
"If these talks progress, then we will get our time to speak.
"But Nico is very happy at Benfica and is looking forward to enjoying a successful season."
While Irribaran is prepared to shed some light on the transfer rumours, Benfica remain tight-lipped when it comes to Gaitan's future.
"The club do not respond to news published in the papers," a club spokesman told skysports.com.

This guy would make an incredible signing for Manchester United... especially if he's as good as he is in Football Manager.

I think he would be just what United are looking for, but would be difficult to get hold of when Benfica are still in the Champions league and United aren't
