Bayer Leverkusen are desperate to take Dimitar Berbatov back to the Bundesliga and have been in contact with the Bulgarian.
When asked by German tabloid Bild about the move, his representative Ivan Dobrinov replied: 'It’s more than a rumour. Leverkusen have it on their minds to get Berbatov. There is contact, but nothing concrete yet. It all depends on United’s plans.'
Three and easy: Berbatov smashed a hat-trick against Wigan
Berbatov spent five seasons at the BayArena before his move to Tottenham in 2006 and the striker - despite hitting a hat-trick against Wigan on Boxing Day - has failed to command a first-team place Old Trafford.
Friends reunited? Berbatov and Michael Ballack could both be at the BayArena
Bayer are still fondly remembered by Berbatov, and according to Dobrinov, the two parties have been in regular contact about the 30-year-old's possible return.
'The player has never forgotten Leverkusen, the club is still very dear to him. Furthermore, he has a good relationship with the leadership at Bayer,' Dobrinov said.
Leverkusen CEO Wolfgang Holzhauser was alittle more cagey, although he did confirm that contact had been made.
'I would even say that the contact is friendly,' he added.
'But there is certainly nothing concrete at the moment. I also read that Manchester United would like to extend his contract.'
