Defender swoop: Manchester United eye move for Bolton's Gary Cahill

HIGHLY RATED: Gary Cahill Manchester United are on standby to snap up a January sales bargain and land England star Gary Cahill from Bolton.
The Reds are looking at options to fill the big gap created by the loss of captain Nemanja Vidic who ruptured his kneeligament in Basel last week.
United are resigned to being without the influential Serbian defender for the rest of the season but are also steeling themselves for a potential 12-month absence as they await news on when the 31-year-old will undergo surgery.
Sir Alex Ferguson was not initially looking to add to a five-strong senior central defensive core but Vidic’s injury woes could change his plans.
The Reds have been playing £16m summer capture Phil Jones in midfield and it is a role that is winning the 19-year-old admirers.
Injuries to the Brazilian da Silva twins has meant Chris Smalling is also continuing at right back and he too has been impressing in the position.
With Smalling and Jones set to be employed elsewhere long term, it now leaves just Rio Ferdinand and Jonny Evans at the heart of United’s back four. It has forced Fergie into a re-think and Cahill is emerging as a potential transfer window steal.
The 25-year-old Wanderers centre-half is out of contract at the Reebok in the summer and has been reluctant to sign a new deal.
Arsenal were keen to sign him in the summer but Arsene Wenger baulked at the asking price, believed to have been £25m.
The Gunners boss says he is no longer interested in Cahill but Chelsea and Spurs are being linked with a mid-season swoop.
Bolton are currently rooted to the foot of the Premier League and Cahill, who is set to land a place in Fabio Capello’s Euro 2012 squad in the summer, wouldn’t want to go to the Ukraine and Poland contemplating possible life in the Championship next term.
