Match Preview - Liverpool 1-1 Manchester United Competition: Premier League Kick-Off & Date: 12:45pm, Saturday, 15th October 2011 Venue: Anfield, Liverpool (Away) Attendance: 45,065 Manchester United were heading for another defeat at Anfield, until Javier Hernandez came off the bench and headed The Red Devils to a late 1-1 draw with local rivals Liverpool. In a fiery fixture, referee Andre Marriner was under pressure from the home crown to punish United for the smallest offence, and did just that when awarding a free-kick that Kop captain Steven Gerrard scored in the 68th minute. But 9 minutes from time, Chicharito came to the rescue... Sir Alex Ferguson rested many key players, starting David De Gea in goal. Rio Ferdinand paired Jonny Evans at centre-back, with Chris Smalling and Patrice Evra as full-backs. In a five-man midfield, Phil Jones, Darren Fletcher and Ryan Giggs featured in the centre, with Ji-Sung Park and Ashley Young out wide as wingers. Up-front all on his own was Danny Welbeck, in a starting XI with 8 'home-grown' footballers, a far cry from Liverpool's line-up. Both sides looked a bit rusty in the opening stages, after a two-week International interval, but it was an exciting game of footie to watch. Mistakes usually lead to goals, and there was plenty of errors but nobody punished them. Pat Evra crossed into Jones early on, but the young defender could only find the side netting with the near-side of the goal left unguarded. Liverpool responded through Steven Gerrard, whose cross was almost converted. Charlie Adam's shot deflected off Evans and into the path of Luis Suarez, who was stopped by David De Gea before he could get a shot away. Fletcher dragged wide from long range, before Park robbed The Scousers of the ball but his counter-attack broke down with a wayward effort. In the second half, Suarez kicked Evra in the same way Wayne Rooney got a red card and three-game ban for England, but referee Andre Marriner let the incident go. The row between Suarez and Evra continued, as the Uruguayan striker appeared to make racist comments towards the French defender, with ref. Marriner handling the situation in diabolical fashion. Suarez attempted to put his arm around Evra, and United's fullback pushed him away before Patrice was booked for complaining to the official that Suarez had made racist remarks. Two incidents that The FA should punish with the strictest suspensions. Referee Andre Marriner was again embroiled in controversy, as he award a comical free-kick to Liverpool after Charlie Adam dived in a failed attempt to get Rio Ferdinand sent-off. The free was given, and Steven Gerrard scored from it. Giggsy moved from the wall, and Gerrard's shot - not the best of efforts - made it through to the goals. He celebrated as if he had just won the Champions League, and United's players set about to humiliate Gerrard... Liverpool's opening goal on 68 minutes was in line with the flow of the match - as The Scousers had had the best build-up and majority of possesion leading up to the goal - but the manner in which they scored was harsh. Wayne Rooney and Luis Nani were recruited in favour of Ji-Sung Park and Ash Young on 69 minutes, before Phil Jones left to be replaced by Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez - who had scored late against the Merseysiders' last season. Jose Enrique Sanchez managed to escape a double handball in the penalty area, with Sir Alex Ferguson left fuming at the fourth official. Liverpool and their crowd were lifted by Gerrard's goal, but United started to do what they do best: Score. You just had the feeling that The Red Devils would muster up at least one goal in the last quarter of the fixture, and that's exactly what they did on 81 minutes through super-sub Javier Hernandez... Luis Nani's corner was helped on it's way by a flick from Danny Welbeck's head, and it was Chicharito who was standing by to convert the ball into the back of the net as he shielded the challenge of Martin Skrtel. Hernandez scored in a repeat of what he did last season at The Kop, scoring with his head form close range late on... Except this time, United were looking likely to come out of the game with a deserved result. They then pushed for the winner. |
